Emma Boyd's grandfather (former UK sheepdog trials champion) and her father first developed Emma’s knowledge and love of dogs as a young child when she observed them breeding and training working sheepdogs and working gun dogs. She has gone onto use this knowledge to not only breed and train her own dogs, but to aid in her osteopathic treatments of dogs from a wide variety of different breeds and canine disciplines.

Emma completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Animal Osteopathy at the end of 2003 from the world renowned Osteopathic Centre for Animals, training with one of the world’s leading equine and canine osteopaths Stuart McGregor. She has gone on to use her own canine knowledge and experience, as well as knowledge gained from working with vets and watching trainers from various canine disciplines, combined with osteopathic training to help dogs and their owners from family pets through to national champions.

CANINE

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of assessing, diagnosing, treating and preventing a wide range of health problems. Canine specialist osteopaths are commonly known for helping to treat neck pain, back pain, general aches and pains, postural and performance problems in dogs from a variety of ages and causes. For example: age associated stiffness, conformation related problems, canine sports performance issues and minor canine musculoskeletal sports injuries from agility/ working trials/ gun dog work etc.

As an osteopath I take the time to try to understand my canine patients, and their unique combination of symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This helps to make an accurate diagnosis of the causes of the pain or lack of function (rather than just addressing the site of the condition), and from that, to formulate a treatment plan that will aim to achieve the best outcome.

As a therapeutic discipline, osteopathy uses the application of joint articulation and gentle soft tissue techniques to your dog to release tight and irritated muscles, tendons and ligaments with the aim of relaxing them and reducing irritation in surrounding tissues. This treatment is intended to then result in a reduction of your dog’s pain symptoms and thereby increase their range of movement.

As a canine osteopath I frequently work alongside vets as well as alternative veterinary practitioners, such as canine hydrotherapists. If your dog is currently under veterinary treatment, you must consult your vet, and myself, before booking your horse in to see me. Most vets are, however, aware of the benefits of osteopathic treatment for dogs and will readily give their permission for the dog to be treated.

Disclaimer:
These treatments are not as replacement for professional veterinary treatment and it is always recommended that you maintain a good relationship with your veterinary practitioner.

"I have been competing in Working Trials for over fifteen years, two of my dogs are Working Trials Champions gaining eleven Kennel Club Challenge Certificates as well as over fifty Tracking Dog and Patrol Dog Excellent qualifications. I have won the Kennel Club Championship and been placed several times.

No matter how good the dog or how good a trainer you are, to compete at this level the canine athlete need to be in top physical condition. I have known Emma for many years where her skill and experience have, without doubt, kept my dogs in full fitness. Without Emma's ability and her honest and practical advice the success my dogs have had would not have been possible."
